Bio-Diesel, Air Quality and Asthma
Environmental - Air Quality
This idea was discussed at the February meeting of Sandwell Asthma Supporters Group, with further discussion scheduled for the March meeting. This is intended to lead to some firm proposals.
Supposing that all Service Buses operating within the City of Birmingham, and neighbouring boroughs such as Sandwell, Dudley, Wolverhampton, Solihull, Walsall and Sutton Coldfield used bio-diesel. Ideally, they would use at least 35% vegetable oil, but available quantities might mean a starting point as low as only 5%.
Absolutely no modification to the vehicles would be required. But the better performance of bio-diesel would mean a significant reduction in smoke particulates. Other benefits from using bio-diesel should also mean generally better engine perfomance and reduced maintenance.
The immediate reduction in pollution levels would be seen in a reduction in polution related illnesses such as asthma. And everyone would enjoy the cleaner air quality.
In practical terms, one way forward would be for CENTRO to set up a bio-diesel processing plant, and to arrange supplies for all the relevant transport operators. Though relatively new, this is now proven technology. Companies such as Global Commodities of Norfolk and Enviro-Diesel of Doncaster could offer advice or even operate the plant on behalf of Centro.
